“Becoming Faithful Stewards”

Date: December 6, 2003
Appeal: Local Church Budget
STOP STEALING!!

In December, 1993 the police station in Yakima, Washington received an urgent call from a local convenience store clerk, stating that his store had just been robbed.

“We had just had fresh snow,” said Detective Nolan Wentz, “and the clerk told the investigating officers that the man who had come in and robbed him had come in from one direction and left in another.”
“Well, fresh snow is a boon to criminal investigators because it leaves wonderful tracks” Wentz said. “Only trouble was, that night there were no tracks whatsoever outside the convenience store. The thief either left by helicopter or somebody was lying. So we began to suspect the clerk.”

The officers found the missing money under the dumpster, which was in a locked area that could only be reached by the store clerk.

We can only marvel at the stupidity of this convenience store clerk. However, he is not alone in thinking he won’t get caught. The Bible is full of individuals who thought they could rob God and get away with it. Achan took a Babylonish garment and two hundred shekels of silver, contrary to the command of Jehovah. Ananias and Sapphira in the New Testament made a pledge to give to the early church the proceeds of their property and then reneged. Unfortunately, the same sin is found in the modern church, that of robbing our generous God; of neglecting to thank Him for His abundant blessings by failing to return tithes and offerings.

Appeal text: “He who overcomes will inherit all this, for I am his God and he is my son. But those who continue lying, cheating,. . . [will] suffer the consequences of their sins.” [Revelation 21: 7-8]
