REMEMBERING MILLIE

If ever there was a “worthy student,” it was Millie. Growing up on a ramshackle cabin on a sagebrush prairie, with no running water and no electricity, circumstances seemed to mitigate against success. Dad chose not to be gainfully employed, but it wasn’t as though Mom didn’t try. In fact, Mom gave it everything she had. She was absolutely determined that Millie and Her sister would receive a Christian education — not just any Christian education, but an Adventist Christian education

The problem was that Mom had no marketable skills and the nearest Adventist elementary school was 50 miles away. No matter. Mom packed Millie and her sister into an old Datsun pickup and moved lock, stock, and barrel to one-room quarters in an old, deserted farmhouse. And while Millie and sis attended school, Mom scoured the community looking for odd jobs —any job — most often housecleaning at minimum wages.

In the end, Mom realized her dream, with the much-needed assistance of worthy student funds along the way. Millie finished elementary, then academy, then college, and is today teamed with her husband as self-supporting missionaries to a “dark county” in these United States, introducing neighbors to Jesus. And what of the turmoil and uncertainty of those younger years? Millie will tell you that all is well, thanks to the generous, often anonymous gifts of folk just like you to a “worthy student.”

Please give liberally to today’s offering. There are other Millies children throughout the Southern new England Conference — for whom a well-timed financial boost can make a difference for eternity.

Appeal text: “All your sons [and daughters] will be taught byt he Lord, and great will be your children’s peace” (Isaiah 54:13, NIV).
