From My Heart: Selfishness is something all of us struggle with. In God's great plan to save us from sin and selfishness He has given us the gift of giving -- the opportunity to share of ourselves and advance His cause. This matter of generous giving is so important that it is one of the dominant themes of the Bible. The word faith in its various forms is used 246 times in the Bible. The word hope is used 185 times. The word love -- something that is so very important -- is used 733 times. And the words give and giving are used 2,285 times in God's Word. The distinguished psychiatrist Karl Menninger says, "Giving is an important criteria of mental health. Generous people are rarely mentally ill." -- DBM
